PARA SWIMMING

DISABILITIES CATERED FOR BY SPORT:

Visual Impairments; Intellectual Impairments; Neurological impairments; Dwarfism; amputees and wheelchair users.

HOW DOES THE SPORT WORK:

Para swimming is open to male and female athletes in all eligible impairment groups who compete in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, medley and relay events. Distances catered for range from 50m to 1500m although not all events are available to all disability groups at every Paralympic Games.

HISTORIC PARALYMPIC REPRESENTATION:

Para swimming is practiced internationally by athletes in nearly 100 countries and has featured in every edition of the Paralympic Games, growing into one of the biggest and most attractive sports.
At the first Rome 1960 Paralympic Games, 77 swimmers from 15 countries competed in the sport. At the Rio 2016 Paralympics, 593 swimmers from 79 countries competed in 152 medal events.
