Your Questions, Answered

What is SASAPD and para sport?

SASAPD is the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled. Para sport provides competitive and recreational sporting opportunities for people with eligible physical and visual impairments. From beginners to Paralympians, there is a pathway for everyone.

Who can participate in para sport?

People with eligible impairments of all ages and abilities can participate in para sport. Whether you want to compete recreationally or aspire to represent South Africa, there is a place for you.

What types of impairments are eligible?

Eligibility varies by sport, but includes physical impairments and visual impairments. Each sport has its own eligibility and classification requirements.

Do I need a disability certificate?

Not necessarily. However, you may be asked to provide medical documentation that confirms your impairment when undergoing classification or registering for competition.

Do I need to be classified before I can start?

No. In most cases, you can begin training, attending club sessions and learning a sport before receiving a formal classification.

Can children participate?

Yes. Para sport opportunities are available for children and young people. Age requirements may vary depending on the sport and level of competition.

What if I have more than one impairment?

Many athletes have multiple impairments. An assessment will determine how your impairment affects performance in a particular sport and whether you meet the eligibility criteria.

Can I compete recreationally before classification?

In many cases, yes. Local clubs and development programmes often welcome newcomers before formal classification takes place.

Which sports are suitable for my impairment?

Suitable sports depend on your impairment, interests and goals. SASAPD offers Athletics, Boccia, CP Football, Cycling, Goalball, Judo, Powerlifting and Swimming.
